HANDLING LAMBS
Alleged Slowing Down
(N.Z.P.A.) AUCKLAND. Jan. 13. A slowing down in the rate of handling of lambs at the Southdown works of the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company is alleged to have been in-
stituted 'by the slaughtermen, who have expressed dissatisfaction with conditions under which the chain killing system is operated. A representative of the company stated that the output of lambs had fallen since Monday, when the men brought their grievance to the notice of the management.
The firm's representative stated that delegates of the men waited on the management on Monday morning and asked that conditions on the chains should be brought into line with those in other works. The management told the men that the conditions were similar to those in other freezing works operating on the same system, and to enable the workers to get first-hand information and a verification of this statement, officials had invited the men to make use of the works telephones to ring other works. Nothing further eventuated, stated the representative, but it was found that the output fell considerably on Monday, only 4250 lambs being handled out of 5000 yarded lor the day’s operations. The slower rate of output had continued on Tuesday and also to-day. No statement has been issued by. or on behalf of the 70 slaughtermen concerned. and no meetings have been held at the works.
