SUNDAY BUS SERVICE
the two Sundays in the Christmas and New Year holiday periods an extended bus service was run in Timaru. It did not actually represent much of a concession to the public, but it was welcome because it allowed families to spend pleasant afternoons at Caroline Bay and be assured of transport to and from the beach. Yesterday, however. the service went back to the Sundav normal, which is only another wav of saying that for practical family purposes it was useless. No doubt it was a nice gesture on the part of the Borough Council to give the maximum consideration to holiday visitors, but it savours rather of the primitive domestic technique of putting out the Roval Doulton for the visitors and letting the family do its best later with the chipped mugs. The Borough Council, whether it is fair-minded enough to admit the obligation or not docs not matter, has a primary duty to the people who live in Timaru and pay the jutes. They are the ones to be considered first. During the summer gnonthrs especially on fine hot days, people should be encouraged to get (out into the fresh sea air. The (present Sunday bus timetable must peny the chance of doing so to •nanv parents with young children, fl he Omnibus Committee no rloubl fwill be able to present hatful of treasons why the timetable cannot be jtltered to meet this demand, but the fact remains that it has already been altered twice, and it should remain altered through January and February at least.
