CROWDED TRAINS
Many Travellers During Holidays
Chiefly because of the restrictions on motoring, trains leaving Timaru during the Christmas-New Year period have been more heavily patronised than usual. Although a number of relief expresses have been run by the Railways Department, all trains in the last few days have been crowded. Now that the visitors are returning home, bookings for next week are heavy. The passenger statistics for the four weeks ended on January 2 disclosed that at Timaru the Railways Department has concluded one of the busiest periods it has experienced for some years. In that period more than 9600 persons left Timaru by train. Reservations have been heavy as the following figures show: Weeks ended: December 12 693. December 19 873, December 26 915, January 2 2073, a total of 4554.
The numbers of passengers leaving Timaru during the holiday period, as compared with the two similar periods of 1940-41 were as follows: Fortnight ended December 19. 1942, 4200; fortnight ended December 20, 1941, 3400. Fortnight ended January 3, 1943, 5400; fortnight ended January 3, 1942, 4600.
