WAIMATE VICE-REGAL VISIT
Official Ceremony Arranged
Shops and business premises in Waimate will be closed for a period on January 19, the occasion of the visit to Waimate of his Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall. At a meeting, at which the Mayor, Mr W. F. Boland presided, it was decided that all shops and business premises should be closed between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in order to give the staffs an opportunity of being present at the official ceremony at Seddon Square where a welcome will be extended to his Excellency at midday. In the case of men parading in uniform. such as members of the Home Guard, members of which will form part of the guard of honour, the meeting decided that such personnel should be released a little earlier. An appeal is made for the display of flags and bunting. SHOP WINDOW SHATTERED The plate-glass display window of the Self Help grocery in Queen Street was smashed yesterday when a carrier's truck jumped the kerb, but prompt action by the driver prevented any further damage. The Waimte Transport Company’s town delivery truck was backed against the kerb outside the Self Help premises, and when the vehicle was cranked to start the engine, it started In gear. The driver. Mr W. Sparks was fortunately clear as the truck mounted the footpath and backed against the shop frontage, whence it rebounded slightly. By this time Mr Sparks was in his seat in the driver’s cab. and he stopped the engine and applied the brakes before any further damage was done. MEAT DELIVERY TO CEASE The delivery of meat to private houses in Waimate will cease as from Monday. An exception Is made in the order, which has been issued by the Zoning Officer (Mr T. H. Langford) in the case of delivery to hospitals, hotels, passenger service buses, and the railway station in Waimate.
