ORDER OF ST. JOHN
Important Anniversary
To those associated with the work of the Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem, an event of considerable interest has just occurred—namely, the completion of 50 years of existence of the St. John Ambulance Brigade Overseas. It was in Dunedin that the first division was formed. At a meeting held at the old Fire Brigade station in Harrop Street (adjoining St. Paul’s Cathedral) on December 21. 1892, it was decided to form a division. Prior to this, the brigade had had no units outside of England. Thus to New Zealand, and to Dunedin in particular, is due the credit of organising a body which to-day has assumed very large proportions throughout the overseas dominions of the Empire. The Overseas Brigade to-day has an adult strength of 1546 divisions with a membership of 45,058, and a cadet roll of 358 divisions and 7706 members, giving a grand total of 1904 divisions and 52,764 members.
