RICCARTON NOTES
(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 7. F. D. Jones took only Scottish Dale when he left n Tuesday for Wingatui. The two-year-old, Burberry, was sore and he was left with R. Register, while V. Lee has charge of another two-year-old, Trueway, during Jones’s absence. J. Pankhurst left for Wingatui on Tuesday with Last Effort and Supercharged. They are very well and R. J. Mackie will ride them. A. S. Ellis will travel to-night with Rawhamai and Gunga Din. Night Pal, a six-year-old by Nightmarch from Palantua, trained in the past at Wingatui, has been bought by Mr A. Kyle, of Greymouth, and he is due to join V. Lee’s stable at Riccarton. Adina will also go there when he comes in from his spell on the West Coast. Mrs L. Campbell, who has been training here for several years, has decided to make a change, and she will shift to Hawke’s Bay, where she has the promise of a useful team of horses. She will return here after racing Nightglass and Cheap Lodging at Trentham, to settle her business affairs here. The owners with horses in her stable have already been informed and she hopes to leave for her new home in a few weeks. During her residence at Riccarton Mrs Campbell has had some good horses under her care, including Thurina, winner of the Grand National Steeplechase; Willie Win, two Great Autumn Handicaps; Vintage, Dunedin and Wellington Cups, and Wardress, Canterbury Cup. A. Messervy will go to Wingatui this week and will ride Gallopade, Royal Rae, Scottish Dale and Kevin. L. J. Ellis will also, make another trip south and he has been engaged for Silver Sox, Royal Brief and Gunga Din. Sham Boy returned from the West Coast this week, suffering from a poisoned leg. Mr W. Payne was on the track one day this week with All Night. He has been spelling for about two months, after developing lameness in a shoulder, but his owner is hopeful of having him ready to show good form again in the autumn. Sir Gundi is having a short rest after his recent racing. In his place A. McAulay is giving Stabilise another trial to see if he will stand a preparation. His near hind leg, which was injured when he fell at Washdyke in October, continues to cause some trouble.
