Success Of British Submarine
British Official Wireless RUGBY, January 6. “A large troop transport and a supply ship have been destroyed and two further supply ships hit and probably sunk by British submarines operating in the Mediterranean,” states an Admiralty communique. "Tlie troop transport was attacked off Sicily when southward bound, by a .submarine commanded by Lieutenant R. B. Lakin. In spite of a heavy escort the attack was successful. The vessel was hit by three torpedoes and sank. “Off the Gulf of Naples a submarine commanded by Lieutenant A. C. G. Hars torpedoed a large enemy supply ship. This vessel was severely damaged and its destruction, is considered probable. The submarine carried out a bombardment of a brick rail viaduct near Palinuto, securing a large number of hits. Considerable damage was done to the viaduct. Harbour Installations Shelled "Another enemy supply vessel of medium size was torpedoed and probably sunk off the Italian coast by a submarine commanded by LieutenantCommander L. W. Napier. The vessel ‘was proceeding noftliward from Naples, escorted by E-boate. “A large supply ship, under escort, wak attacked and sunk in'the Aegean by a submarine commanded by Lieutenant A. J. W. Pitt. This submarine also made an attack by gunfire on shipping and harbour installations in the enemy-occupied Greek port of Kuez. Marty hits were observed."
