DUAL PURPOSE GUN
Successful Against Planes WASHINGTON, January 6. The Associated Press says that the fact that an unidentified American battleship in the Battle of Santa Cruz on October 28 shot down 32 divebombers and torpedo-planes seems to have made battleships terrors for warplanes. The secret seems to be a fiveinch dual-purpose gun. able to throw up a murderous curtain of fire, which is now the main reliance of the navy anti-aircraft section. The Secretary of the Navy (Colonel Frank Knox) described it as a perfectly splendid weapon against either aerial surface targets.
