CRANE DRIVERS

Night Shift Resumed

(N.Z.P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 7. Crane drivers employed by the Auckland Harbour Board started work on night shift to-night for the first time for about a month.

This action followed the meeting of an Emergency Disputes Committee in Wellington on Wednesday to consider the claims of Dominion crane drivers employed under the Harbour Board Employees’ Award regarding the minimum hours of payment for night shift work. Crane drivers, who are given a guaranteed minimum payment for three hours on night shift, desired the same conditions as the waterslders, who received a four hour minimum payment if work is not started, and pay for eight hours once work is started.

The Auckland employers’ represen tative on the Disputes Committee, Mr D. Holderness, Engineer-Superintend-ent of the Auckland Harbour Board, who has returned from Wellington, said that the meeting had not been entirely finalised, and that decision would be promulgated by the chairman, Mr J. A. Gilmour, S.M. All he could say was that the crane men would start work.
