ADDINGTON MARKET
KEEN DEMAND FOR LAMBS (N.Z.P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 6. The store sheep yarding at Addington, comprised mostly of lambs, totalling 1880, met with keen competition, especially in the early stages, and prices were on a par with the high values ruling before the holidays. One line of forward lambs made 23/6 and another 23/7. Both were bought by freezing buyers. Best grazing lambs made from 20/- to 21/7, good 18/- to 19/8, and lighter from 17/3 to 17/8. Only 200 wethers of medium quality were forward and these sold from 19/3 to 23/1. Of 1000 ewes offered, lines suitable for early lambs were in demand and made from 16/3 to 19/3, medium ewes from 12/6 to 14/7, inferior down to 2/6. The fat sheep entry totalled 4000 against 5000 last sale, the bulk being again ewes. The few pens of good quality wethers sold well, but light and unfinished sorts were difficult to sell. This was the case also with ewes. Best price for young ewes was 28/-. Wethers showed little change on the high figures of recent sales. Better class ewes recovered up to 2/- a head on a substantial drop of from 7/- to 9/- at the pre-holiday sale. Fat Cattle: There was a moderate yarding comprised mostly of secondary cattle. There was very little difference in values from those of last sale. Good steers and heifers fully maintained recent rates. One line of 24 steers averaged £l9/4/6 and another of eight averaged £22. Best beef made from 46/- to 49/- per 1001 b, medium 43/- to 45/6, secondary 37/- to 41/6, inferior down to 32/-. The porker entry was considerably larger than at the previous sale. Competition was very keen over the first half of the sale, but then there was an easing of 5/to 6/- a head all round. The average price per pound was 7d to 9d. Choppers were in good supply and were keenly sought after at prices about £1 a head up on the previous sale. The baconer yarding was small and competition dull, values showing an easing of 5/to 10 - a head. The average price per lb was 6d to 7d. GERALDINE SALE Approximately 800 good quality fat lambs and a small penning of fat sheep comprised the total yarding at the Geraldine stock sale yesterday. Values for lambs realised schedule rates with fat sheep selling on a par with recent sales. Prices were: Prime heavy lambs, 23/- to 25/1; prime medium lambs, 21/10 to 22/10; prime ewes, 12/4 to 14/10; prime wethers to 26/10; weaner pigs, 24/- to 30/-.
