POTATO MARKET
Embarrassing Surplus Unlikely Statement By Minister <N.Z.P.A I WELLINGTON. Jan. 4 The Minister of Agriculture and Marketing. Hon. J. G. Barclay, in commenting to-day on the position of the potato market, said that the Internal Marketing Division was in no waj connected with potato marketing. The Government was determined to avoid, if possible, the recurrence of last seasons shortage, and, after consulting growers’ representatives, had fixed a range of prices for the current season which would ensure adequate supplies. Without a guarantee of stability in prices it was obvious that no assurance could be obtained that sufficient potatoes would be grown to meet the needs of civilians and the Armed Forces. The Government’s action in guaranteeing the growers a reasonably good pric f * for their crops, and at the same time ensuring that the retail price was also at a reasonable level, had resulted in the increased planting of over 6000 acres, and the avoidance of a recurrence of last season’s serious position. At present there was a temporary over-supplv on some local markets. This was the result of a certain amount of unrestricted digging, and should not be construed to mean that there was a likelihood of an embarrassing surplus.
