PITCHED BATTLE
Germans Surrender To Italians (Rec. 7.0) . CAIRO, Dec. 31. Details of a pitched battle between Axis forces near El Alamein were brought to light during an examination of enemy documents captured in Libya. The Germans surrendered to the Italians before the mistake was discovered. From the tone of the documents pertaining to the subsequent court inquiry, it is evident that the Italians were highly delighted at the incident, which occurred when an Italian battalion was advancing on foot as part of the general attack. When fired on they promptly gave battle to their onnone.nts, who surrendered after an hour’s fighting. They were found to be part of a German battalion. Twenty Germans and five Italians were killed or wounded and three lorries destroyed. The Germans, who had been given motor transport, had advanced faster than the Italians, and seeing the Italians approaching to their sunnort some time later believed them to be surrounded by Britishers.
