(Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON. Dec. 31. The total number of live births registered in England and Wales during the September quarter was 168.838. which is the highest of any quarter since June. 1930. it represented a birth rate of 16.1 per 1000 of the population, which is also the highest since 1930. Still-births reached the lowest rate yet recorded. For the first time in any quarter since 1936 the total deaths fell below 100,000. There was a decline in the number of marriages.
