Dressed Poultry For Dominion Troops Gift By American Navy (N.ZP.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 31. A large quantity of dressed poultry has been given by the United States Navy to the Northern Military District Command for distribution to soldiers for their New Year's dinner. The gift is a good will gesture which the New Zealanders greatly appreciate. The quantity is stated to be sufficient to give a poultry dinner to all New Zealand troops at camps within easy reach of railheads. Information of the gift was received at the Northern Military District Headquarters to-day, and arrangements were immediately made for the distribution of the birds. New Zealand camps do not usually celebrate New Year s dinner with the same elaborate menus as on Christmas Day. although units commonly arrange a sports meeting or some other entertainment to make the entry into the New Year as enjoyable as possible. Leave and furlough take numbers of men out of camp. The Americans themselves celebrate New Year s Day with a standard national holiday dinner laid down for all services. This signifies a meal that is both satisfactory in its number of courses and in its variety.
