NAVAL LOSSES

Expedition To North Africa

Light Considering Size Of Operations

By Telegraph—N.Z Press Assn —Copyright (1 a.m.) ‘ LONDON, Dec. 3. In the House of Commons to-day the First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr A. V. Alcxmdcr, gave details of the naval operations hi the recent North African expedition. Mr Alexander said that after a long period of preparation, the success of the expedition depended on the enemy remaining ignorant of the disposition of the forces. Naval losses had been considerable, but far less than expected. In view of the immensity of the operations, they were comparatively light. The losses were:— Two destroyers, H.M.S. Brook and H.M.S. Martin. One corvette, H.M.S. Jardenia. One corvette, H.M.S. Gardenia. Two cutters, Walney and Hartland. One sloop. One depot ship. One minesweeper. One anti-aircraft vessel. One small aircraft-carrier, H.M.S. Avenger. The Royal Netherlands Navy lost a destroyer. Mr Alexander said that he did not propose publishing details of merchant shipping losses, for it was desirable to keep the enemy guessing.
