BOXING DISPLAY

Waima taitai School Keenly Contested Bouts With a programme of 76 bouts the pupils of the Walmataitai School from the Primers to Standard VI provided excellent fare at the annual boxing tournament in aid of school funds which attracted a crowded audience to the Caroline Bay Hall last night. The bouts were fought with the enthusiasm typical of youth and even the little fellows of five years showed that they could take plenty of punishment. What some of the boys lacked in skill was more than compensated for by the vigour of their attacks, while others showed a nicety of footwork and an appreciation of the finer points of the sport. Mr S. H. Sullivan acted as controller and Mr J. Stewart was the referee. Opportunity was taken by Mr E. T. Stout, chairman of the Waimataitai School Committee, to welcome the Mayor, Mr A. E. S. Hanan, and Messrs C. Stanley Smith (chairman) and A. Manning and A. E. Lawrence, the Timaru representatives on the Canterbury Education Board. He thanked Mr M. McKenna and the members of the Timaru Boxing Association for their assistance and paid a tribute to Dr. C. S. Fraser, who had examined more than 150 boys before they had gone into the ring. Mr Stout complimented the headmaster and his staff, both men and women, on the display, remarking that the women teachers were taking a very keen interest in sport outside their school duties. Thanks were also due to the members of the School Committee for their assistance.

Mr Stout explained that the proceeds were in aid of the school funds. Last year a campaign had been raised to provide an assembly hall and visual training apparatus, and portion of the amount raised that evening would be set aside for that purpose. Owing to the war the building scheme would have to be delayed, but it would be proceeded with as soon as it was practicable to do so. This year was the diamond jubilee of the school, but, owing to the war and to the absence of many of the ex-pupils in the Armed Forces, the celebrations would have to be postponed.
