Borough Quota Meeting To Be Heid A public meeting is to be called to discuss the position of the borough quota of the ‘’Win the War” Appeal, according to a decision of the Waimate Borough Council. It was stated by the Town Clerk (Mr B. S. Rpnciman) that to date £llOO was in hand toward the allocation of £2400. The subject was introduced by Cr. A. G. McHardy, who asked what was being done to raise the remainder of the Mayor (Mr W. F. Boland) said it would be necessary to make a further effort to complete the quota. He made a request that Councillors and collectors who had not already done so should hand in their lists as early as P Runciman said that leaving out the business firms, who had given a considerable sum, the average amount per household was very small. ‘in tne last appeal we slightly exceeded oui quota, but this one is going to be more difficult,’’ he added. The Mayor suggested that another meeting of collectors should be , He said he still favoured the direct appeal method of raising the funds. A personal canvass resulted in all money collected going to the Patriotic Fund, but with queen carnivals and other similar means there was often considerable expenditure. He went on to say that the Waimate public in the past had been noted for generous giving. As an example there was the Services Club where hundreds of pounds worth of materials had been either given or loaned. ‘‘l am sure,” he added, “that the people will respond and that we will get our quota.” Cr. McHardy said he also favoured the direct appeal, but said he thought in the present instance it would be appealing again to those who had already given. He asked if there was any way of getting at those who had not yet given. The Mayor: There are those who will not give—who absolutely refuse —and if you put on a Patriotic concert they won’t go to that either. WATER SUPPLY A further step in regard to the improvements to the borough water supply was reported to the Town Clerk at a meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday night. Mr Runciman stated that water supply improvement loan debentures had been issued to. a total of £ll,OOO, and the sum of £2OOO had been placed on deposit. Advice had been received that the pipes were being forwarded and were expected to arrive any day. To cover the shipment, the sum of £4600 had been forwarded. The application of Mr W. Lane, of Parsonage Road, for an extraordinary water supply was granted. The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce wrote soliciting support for the request for a radio station for Timaru. Cr. McHardy moved that the request be supported. He said he felt that such a statio nin Timaru would be of great service to South Canterbury. The motion was carried. The application ot the Silver Band for a subsidy of £2O was granted. A donation of £2/2/- was voted to the Makogal Lepers’ Appeal. ATTRACTING BELLBIRDS An endeavour is to be made to attract bellbirds to parks and gardens in Waimate. The Borough Council, at a meeting on Tuesday night, decided to instruct the gardener (Mr N. M. Morrison) to include in his next list of plantings a number of shrubs and trees, the flowers and berries of which attract the birds, and to make provision for water and artificial feeding until the trees come into bearing. The project was brought .inder the notice by a letter from Mr E. C. Studholme, which listed 14 different types of trees and shrubs. The writer added: “If everyone did a little in the way of planting and feeding the result would be assured.’’ The Mayor (Mr W. F. Boland) commended the idea, and it was decided to write to Mr Studholme thanking him for the suggestion and the information. Mention was made of the success achieved by the late Mr W. D. Napier in attracting bell birds to his garden. PERSONAL Leave of absence for a further period of three months was granted Cr. S. I. Fitch at a meeting of the Waimate Borough Council.
