THEFT OF BRANDY

Cleverly Committed (P.A.) DUNEDIN, June 12. “It seems to me that the theft must have been cleverly committed, and your attempts to put eff the investigating officers were cunning.” said Mr Justice Kennedy in sentencing Andrew Curtis Blee. a waterside worker, aged 33. on a charge of the theft of four bottles of brandy. The Judge added that although 22 bottles appeared to have been stolen it was to the theft of only four that prisoner had pleaded guilty. It was difficult to resist the conclusion that there was somewhere, by some person or persons, wholesale pillage. “There seems no excuse for your dishonesty." said Mr Justice Kennedy. "Last year vour earnings from the wharf exceeded £5OO. It must have been sheer covetousness."
