HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR CANADA

CINCE it is essential that there should be the fullest possible Collaboration between the nations of the British Commonwealth the decision of the Government to appoint the Hon. F. Langstone New Zealand High Commissioner to Canada will be welcomed. Mr Langstone has been absent from the Dominion for a considerable time, but the Prime Minister is able to give an assurance that he has done valuable work as head of the Supply Mission to the United States. In the early stages of his mission Mr Langstone, it will be recalled, had the skilled assistance of Mr Coates. The Government has yet to appoint a Minister to Australia, but the Prime Minister has stated that this question is receiving consideration. There is no reason wht* it should be considered for an indefinite time, for the appointment, if it is to have fullest value, should be made promptly. The only question that will arise through Mr Nash, Mr Langstone and another Minister serving overseas is that of replacing these men in the Cabinet. War administration is absorbing the whole energy of a strong group of Ministers with the result that domestic administration is becoming the responsibility of the tail-enders of the Cabinet. Replacements will be necessary, but there is no reason why they should be made from men whose only claim for attention is that they have been members of the Labour Party for a long time.
