Kindergarten was galloped five furlongs in smart time at Trentham on Thursday, and pulled up well. He has built up since last season and is now a more impressive-looking horse. 7he six-year-old pacer, Oxford Scholar, trained at Greymouth by C. K. Yeatman, has made a good recovery from the injuries he received in his yard some months ago, and is again m work. At the time of the accident it was feared that his racing days were over. In the Wellington Cup, Happy Ending 7.13 beat Battledress 7.11 by inches. In the Autumn Handicap, Happy Ending comes in on one pound better terms, but the distance is five furlongs shorter, and the three-year-old is likely to have made greater Improvement. Battledress looks the most formidable opponent for Arctic Dawn. Lord Lynn, No. 2 in the Forsyth Hack at Motukarara, has not raced since he missed a place in the Trial Plate at Trentham twenty months ago. His only win was achieved in a maiden plate at the Banks Peninsula fixture in 1940. Lord Lynn is by Lord Warden from Knocklyn, and is now five years old. Speculation will not be stimulated by the presence of Kindergarten in the Challenge field at Trentham. Many people will hesitate to support him owing to uncertainty regarding his fitness, but will have no real confidence in other candidates with the Gisborne horse unpenalised. With his pull in tJie weights Kindergarten will not need to be at his peak to win. Some weeks ago it was decided that the Riccarton and Addington courses would be closed for racing until after the war. Now it is announced that both will be in use at Easter. It is understood that there is a possibility of the Ashburton track being available again before the end of the season. For her win at Dunedin, Wild Fox was penalised only 21b in the Peninsula Cup, but in this race she will meet Hearth on only one pound better terms than when the Dunedin mare defeated her at Trentham last month. The pair Should fight out the finish. Eulogist was tried as a middle distance performer at the 0.J.0. summer meeting. He was not disgraced, but the distance in the Kinloch Handicap should suit him better. Eulogist scored a decisive victory in the Criterion Handicap in November, and is well in with 7.9 at Motukarara. Route March, who won the Metropolitan Handicap at Trentham in January with 8.8. has been raised to 9.2 in the Railway. Night Eruption, dead-heater with Sir Beau for second in January, has been lifted 51b, but in the meantime she has won at Otaki. Autolite has been dropped 21b and Not Out is down 11b. All these should make a fight with the three-year-old topwelght, and possibly Night Eruption is the pick. The spotlight at Trentham on Saturday will be turned on Kindergarten, the glamour horse of last season, which he completed with a sequence of ten wins, earning £7330. Among the races he won were the Great Northern Derby, tyo St. Legers, North Island Challenge Stakes, Awapuni Gold Cup, and the Auckland Easter Handicap with 9.11. The last-named performance stamped him as a three-year-old of unusual excellence, and the merit of his achievements has been enhanced by the subsequent performances of Beau Leon, Lou Rosa and Sir Beau, horses of his own age which he defeated. Kindergarten was taken to Randwick for the spring racing, and was accorded an extraordinary amount of publicity. In an exhibition gallop he was credited with running the fastest half mile ever seen in Australia. In his first race, however, he finished only third. A few days later he was reported to be amiss, and he was “fired” in one leg. The veterinary who performed the operation advised a spell of at least six months. Kindergarten was trained for all his three-year-old successes by R. S. Bagby, but on returning to the Dominion he was handed over to his original trainer, I. Tinsley, at Gisborne. Almost immediately it was announced that he was in work again, with a view to contesting w.f.a. races at the Auckland summer meeting. He did not make the trip, and since thep conflicting reports have been circulated concerning him. A week or two ago came the news that Tinsley had relinquished his post as trainer to Mr E. Fitzgerald, and that the horse was in the paddock. Hard on the heels of this report came his nomination for Trentham, where he is now again in Bagby’s hands.

The Autumn Handicap at Trentham has not drawn the field expected, and it will be overshadowed by the Challenge Stakes and the Railway. The prospective contestants for the Stakes include Kindergarten (unpenalised). Sir Beau, Nizam and Beau Vaals (first and third in the Wellington Stakes last month). The reappearance of Kindergarten alone would be a draw, and Sir Beau at Ellerslie recently established a Dominion mile record. Another intriguing feature will be the meeting of the two-year-olds Beau Vaals and Nizam (brother to High Caste). In winning the Wellington Stakes. Nizam appeared to be superior to Beau Vaals but in a handicap op the second day Beau Vaals reversed the positions. At his best Kindergarten should have no difficulty in repeating his victory of last year, when he carried the maximum penalty, but there Is an element of doubt regarding his condition. When proceeding to the post to dispatch the field for the Hot Springs Handicap at the Te Aroha meeting on Saturday, the starter, Mr R. H. Skipwlth, collapsed on the course. Mr Skip with was carried to the stand, where he revived quickly after receiving medical attention The last two races were started by Mr J. Gavin.. well yesterday. He is coming down in the weights, and the 8.12 which he is to carry in the Autumn Handicap on Saturday is the lightest impost he has been awarded in a handicap for a long time. H. P. Stewart is mentioned as his probable pilot. In the opening event at Greymouth. Stormalong ran wide in the straight, carrying Locnan, the ultimate winner, with her. After the race C. Humphries, rider of Stormalong, was cautioned lor not making a better effort to keep his mount straight in the run to the post. Beauford, whose destruction is reported from Australia, was owned in Newcastle, and at his peak was a brilliant galloper up to a mile and a half. He achieved fame through a series of clashes with Gloaming. The pair met four times in one season and each won twice. Gloaming was getting up in years and was not quite tuned up when the campaign opened, but in the final clash Gloaming won decisively, and Beauford was never so good again. Like many other horses which raced against The Welkin freak, he paid the penalty. Anticipating very big entries, the I Wellington Racing Club framed a seven race rard for its autumn meeting so that one of the expected divisions would be treated as a separate race on the machine. The nominations were much smaller than usual, and, although there were 28 acceptors in the Tiuakori Hack Handicap, this number was within the safety limit, and the club had to divide it to bring the card up to eight events.
