PATRIOTIC FUND
Launching Of Appeal In Timaru Immediate steps to launch an appeal for £18,781 are to be taken by the Timaru Patriotic Committee, and first donations will be sought by direct contribution. Organisation of the appeal was, at a meeting of the committee last night, entrusted to a sub-committee comprising the chairman (Mr P. B. Foote), Mrs W. G. Tweedy and Mr H. G. Naylor. The launching of the appeal had been delayed, said Mr Foote, as members of the committee had been immersed in E.P.S. duties and as there was some prospect of the total amount being divided up between the Patriotic Society and the Red Cross and St. John Ambulance Such a division might still come about, but he felt that the appeal could not be delayed any longer. He suggested that the first attack should be by direct collection, as in the final stages of the last appeal. The amount to be found was £18,781, which it might be possible to collect in one canvass, although he was not too hopeful. Last year the collection was put in the hands of a small committee which arranged for 12 or 13 men to conduct the collection, and the method proved very satisfactory. Combined with the appeal to the public in general was a house to house collection organised by the Rotary Club. No doubt, similar co-operation would be forthcoming on this occasion. Moving that the collection be by direct appeal. Mrs Tweedy mentioned that the Queen Carnival had proved very expensive. The committee should endeavour to obtain the money by the least expensive method. A direction was given to the chairman to recommend to the Provincial Council that the appeal should be divided up between the Patriotic Council and the Red Cross and St. John Ambulance.
