Archbishop Of York Nominated By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrlgn (Rec. 9.7.) LONDON, Feb. 23. The King has nominated the Archbishop of York (Dr. William Temple) to become Archbishop of Canterbury in place of Dr. Cosmo Lang, who is retiring. The Bishop of Winchester (Dr. Cyril Garbett) will succeed the Archbishop of York.

The son of a former Archbishop cf Canterbury, Dr. Temple, M.A., D.Litt, hon. D.D., hon. LL.D., hon. D.C.L., was born at The Palace, Exeter, in 1881. He was educated at Rugby College and Balliol College, Oxford, where he was an exhibitioner. He took a first class in classical moderations in 1902 and a first class in classics in 1904. From 1904 to 1910 he was a Fellow and lecturer in philosophy at Queen’s College, Oxford. He became deacon in 1908 and priest the following year. He served as chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1910 to 1921 and was honorary chaplain to the King from 1915 to 1921. His educational posts included the headmastership of Repton School (1910-14) and rectorship of St. James, Piccadilly (191418». After serving as Canon of Westminster from 1919 to 1921, Dr. Temple became Bishop of Manchester and in 1929 was appointed Archbishop of York. He was married in 1916 to Miss F. G. Acland. Dr. Temple was president of the Workers’ Educational Association from 1908 to 1924 and was editor of the “Pilgrim” from 1920 to 1927. He is the author of numerous books and essays on religious subjects.
