PRODUCE MARKET
Harvesting Interrupted Inquiry For Seeds During the week harvesting has been interrupted by rain which was heavier in some parts of the district than others. Consequently, headers have not been able to operate, and a good many farmers are cutting their wheat and intend threshing from the stock. Other growers will wait for the headers. In some cases wheat is being threshed without waiting a sufficient time for it to dry out, and. consequently, it is not fit for milling purposes until conditioned. Oats are also coming to hand out of condition. Generally speaking wheat and oats offered during the last fortnight have been much below the grade attained last year. Wheat Wheat is coming on to the market and any of milling quality is readily accepted. Prices up to the end of March will be: Tuscan 5/6, Hunters 5/8 and Velvet 5/10 a bushel. Oats A fair quantity of Gartons has been on offer during the week and 3/6 a bushel has been paid for most lines. Some good lines of Duns are coming to hand, but sales are fairly slow. Good dark heavy lines have changed hands at 3/6 a bushel. Partridge Peas The market for No. 1 partridge peas is very quiet, and at present there Is not much prospect of shipments being made for some time. Nominal quotations are at 5/6 a bushel on trucks. Barley Odd lines have been threshed and have been accepted for immediate delivery. Contract prices are: Windrowed 474 a bushel, stook threshed 4/11, stack threshed 5/3. Chaff There has been no change in the price of chaff which remains at £4 a ton for g.b.o.s. Potatoes Very little interest has been shown in potatoes. Whites are unchanged at £7 a ton on trucks and Sutton’s at £7/10/-. Seeds A fair quantity of seeds has come forward and some of the tests made are better than those made earlier in the season, when seed which had been harvested too early was threshed out of condition. There has been a fair demand for permanent pasture and mother ryegrass during the week, but there has been no improvement in price. White clover is also inquired for and any seed on hand is meeting with a good demand. White clover is coming forward later than was the case last season. Italian ryegrass has shown an improvement in price and is meeting with a good demand. Current prices are:—Mother ryegrass m.d. 9/a bushel, permanent pasture 8/6, uncertified f.d. 3/6, Italian ryegrass certified m.d. 8/6 a bushel, uncertified f.d. 3/6. white clover export quality 2/6 per lb., Montgomery red clover 2/5 per lb. m.d. DUNEDIN <P.A.) DUNEDIN. Feb. 20. Fair quantities of milling wheat are now reaching Dunedin from MidCanterbury. The prices paid by millers for wheat are considerably lower than those guaranteed by the Government to farmers. Tire idea is to keep down the price of bread and the difference in the two prices is paid out of the Consolidated Fund. Only small lots of oats are reaching the market. Wet weather is holding back the harvest. There are practically no lines of seed reaching the market. Prices for white clover are opening high and offerings are not plentiful. Offerings of Italian and perennial ryegrass are also scarce, and reports state that no new season’s cocksfoot is on the market so far. It is stated that the crop of ryegrass in the Hawke’s Bay district will show a heavy decrease as compared with last year. There is a good demand for early lines of rape for shipment overseas.
