WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

ST ANDREWS There was a large attendance at a meeting of the Women's Institute, presided over by the president, Mrs L. R. Bell. Arrangements were made to collect scrap iron in the district. A decision was made to hold functions to raise funds for soldiers’ parcels. Wool was handed out for Red Cross knitting. An appeal was made for clean old linen. Much interest was displayed in a demonstration of smocking given by Mrs A. Glassey and Miss E. Arden. Members were delighted with the smocked articles which were on display. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to both demonstrators. A letter was received from a soldier thanking the Institute for a Christmas cake. Competitions resulted as follows: Khaki handkerchief: Mrs A. Glassey 1. Mrs A. Parrish 2, Mrs L. Bell 3. Pikelets: Mrs Cook 1, Mrs Parrish 2, Mrs Trimble 3. Best bloom (large): Mrs Kane 1, Miss C. Bell 2, Miss D. Kane 3. Best bloom (small): Mrs Trimble 1, Miss C. Bell 2, Mrs Barber 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs and Miss Kane and Mrs C. Hoskin. GAPES VALLEY There was a good attendance at the February meeting of the Gapes Valley Women’s Institute. Mrs H. R. Bailey presided. Sympathy was extended to Miss E. T. J. Davies, Mrs Le Lievre and Mrs Hand. One new member was welcomed. Tire president expressed best wishes for future a happiness to Miss Jessie Patrick, whose marriage will take place shortly. It was decided not to send a delegate to Conference this year. Nominations for president and committee were received. For the March meeting the sales table is for the general fund. Mrs Hibbs offered to prepare the soldiers' parcel for the month. Competitions resulted as follows: Collection of fruit: Mrs H. Bailey 1, Mrs Bigham 2. Collection of vegetables: Mrs H. Bailey 1, Mrs Bigham 2. Bloom: A. Mrs Hibbs 1; B, Miss Hall; C, Mrs E, Maxwell.
