INDIA MUST PREPARE
Warning That Attacks May Come (Rec. 6.30 p.in.) NEW DELHI. Feb. 18. Addressing the Council ot State. General Sir Alan Hartley (Commander in-Chief In India) said: “There is no need to lose heart. Our losses have been grievious and the situation is serious, but in other wars as well as this we have overcome graver situations. We must be prepared for attacks against our shipping, for air attacks against India, for bombardments from the sea and even possibly for landings. The enemy will not lose any opportunity for spreading panic and undermining the morale of the people. Military preparations are well forward to meet the new situation but we must have equipment to replace losses. All men in factories, mills and workshops must work as never before. “It is not likely that any whole units escaped from Singapore but small parties managed to get away. I cannot hold out much hope. The loss of these brave men and valuable equipment is most serious."
