WAR EFFORT TRIAL
Charges Against Former French Leaders (10.21 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 18. The story behind the sudden end of French resistance is expected to he revealed at the war guilt trial in the Supreme Court at Riom, of General Gamelin, M. Lachambre, M. Blum, M. Daladier and M. Jacomet, secretarygeneral to the Ministry of National Defence. T' Cot. who is in the United States, will be tried in absentia. No action is being taken at the moment against M. Reynaud and M. Mandel. The trial, which opens to-morrow, is expected to last between four and six months. The judgment of the’court will be final. It is able to sentence the accused to banishment, but it cannot impose the death sentence. The indictment, applicable to each accused, is that of “betrayal of duties or charges” but there are also specific Indictments. One of the charges against M. Daladier ’S that he failed to complete the Maginot Line to the sea. Another against M. Blum is that he created class struggles and social disorders. The former Foreign Minister, M. Bonnet, has turned State witness.
