JAVA IS WELL DEFENDED
Focal Point Of Dutch Resistance By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec 6.30) WASHINGTON, Feb. 18. Dr. Van Kieffens, the Netherlands Foreign Minister, .in a broadcast, said: "Singapore’s fall does not mean that Java will fall. We have ample troops there. The population is prepared for everything and is well organised. The most important item is the reception of materials in time. lam glad to say that part of the supplies has arrived, but we need much more.” He added that Java was organised as the focal point of resistance in contrast to the situation in other Dutch islands. “It was never the idea to have sufficient troops to hold the outer regions, like the Celebes, Borneo and Amboina Island. The general purpose was to delay the Japanese and destroy materials and industrial plants, which would be useful to the enemy. So far this has been done effectively.”
