AID FOR GREECE
Dispatch When Possible (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 19. The desire of the New Zealand Government to help to relieve the suffering of the people of Greece by the dispatch of food and clothing to that country when this is practicable is expressed in a letter sent by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) to Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, ConsulGeneral for Greece in New Zealand. Mr Fraser’s letter was a reply to one he had received from Mr Seddon, who suggested that the Government should make an appeal on behalf of the Greek pebple. Mr Fraser said that the Government wished very much to assist in relieving the distressing suffering of a gallant ally. The remitting of funds to Greece, even if it were possible, would appear to be of little if any material assistance as apparently no additional food was available there. As regards the supply of food and clothing, it would seem to be little or no use in attempting to arrange a shipment from New Zealand till the position concerning the safe conduct of relief ships was clarified. The Government was watching the position carefully, and if and when assistance became practicable it would be pleased to assist. Mr Fraser concluded that he would be glad to have Mr Seddon's assistance through Greek Government channels in ascertaining what could be done and the best channel for sending assistance.
