FAULTS SHOWN

Last Night’s Blackout Trial NEGLIGENCE OF PUBLIC Glaring instances of negligence on the part of the public were again revealed during the trial blackout in the borough last night. The main fault was the obvious failure of too many householders to provide at least one blackout room to accommodate all persons in the house during the emergency period. Such provision is now obligatory, and breaches discovered in the trial may result in a number of lights being disconnected. It is emphasised that the drawn blinds and shaded lights of the normal reduced lighting are not sufficient for the total blackout emergency. At such times not the slightest chink of light or glow should be emitted from any premises. The blackout was the occasion also of a trial of the alarm system, and it was found that the new whistle and extra sirens were a great improvement, while the gong alarms of the wardens were effective in the respective areas. Satisfactory results were obtained also from the modified communications system. Wardens showed a good grasp of requirements and messages were received at headquarters within one minute of the scheduled times.
