APPEALS HEARD
Manpower Committee Sitting in Timaru Yesterday A sitting of the Manpower Committee was held in Timaru yesterday, when a number of appeals for extension of leave, against mobilisation and for release from camp were dealt with. The committee comprised Messrs K. Mackenzie (chairman), W. Scott and H. Badham. Mr R. S. Gillies represented the Crown. Leave was granted in the following cases:—R. P. Hosken (Simon’s Hill) for O. P. Gibson from February 23 to March 9; Mrs F. Brown (Waimate) for K. D. Laurenson, one month immediately; A. D. Crossman (Milford) for G. J. Crossman, three weeks from February 19; Timaru Borough Council for F. H. Davey, three days Immediately; F. G. Oldfield (Winchmore) for J. H. Oldfield, one week from February W. A. E. Tiffen (Makikihi) for L. A. Tiffen, extension of two weeks; Mrs Clara Page, of Ashburton, for Joseph Henry Page, one week; J. Davidson, of Fairlie, for James Roderick McConnell, two weeks; P. B. Gallen, Fairlie, for James Cornelius Gallen, two weeks immediately; E. Westgarth, Kingsdown, for John Westgarth, one week’s extension; A. Hellewell, Ashburton, for Roy Allan Hellewell, one week's extension; D. J. Clarke, Otaio, for Arthur Leslie Clark, three weeks leave Immediately; C. C. Douglas, Waimate; for R. Rusbatch, 10 days immediately; trustees estate late Alexander Russell, Temuka, for James Russell, one week’s extension; T. C. Dolan, Rakaia, for Kenneth Halliday Dunlea, two weeks’ extension; D. McCosker, Ashburton, for Joseph Patrick McCosker, three weeks immediately. An application by C. Veitch (Waimate) for a rehearing of his appeal was refused. Mobilisation Extended The mobilisation of W. S. Waddington was extended to March 15 on the application of P. R. Talbot (Claremont). An application for leave by A. J. Breakwell, sawmiller, of Tinwald, for G. W. Spicer and W. H. Harris was considered and the committee recommended one month’s leave for Spicer and the dismissal of the application in respect of Harris. An application for the rehearing of the case respecting G. R. Caithness, which was lodged by A. Caithness, of Temuka, was declined. An extension of leave by one week was granted J. Rennie, of Winchester, in an appeal in respect of D. M. Rennie. National Mortgage and Agency Co. appealed for retention from service of Douglas Scott, seed cleaner. Mobilisation was adjourned, the application to be reviewed on June 1. An application by the Waihi Wool Works for rehearing of an application for release from camp of Harry Roland Ives, wool sorter, was granted. Ives is to be released from camp, the case to be reviewed on May 1. Patrick Stephen Coll, farmer, Waitohi, applied for extension of leave for two weeks, which was granted. D. Hall, builder, of Christchurch, appealed in respect of B. A. Toner and J. Toner. The appeals were dismissed, conditional on reservists not being called up before March 31. Appeal by Canterbury Shoe Co., in respect of Frederick Joseph Luxon, a clicker, was withdrawn. Withdrawn—Appeal by Morrison and Sons in respect of William Henry Callow; appeal by R. Malthus in respect of John Fraser Cooper. Dismissed—Appeal by Mrs E. M. Gould for leave for Colin Stanley Gould, Raincliff; E. Dobson, Temuka, for John Robert Jamieson; Mrs I. Kerr, Mt. Somers, for James Kerr. Appeals in respect of the following Territorial Force men were adjourned sine die owing to medical unfitness:— E. N. J. Hannah, M. G. Hampton, C. E. J. Gould, P. Harkness, J. C. Keam, M. J. Ashton, P. J. Clark, R. T. Drennan, E. A. Cram, J. D. Dunn, J. L. Bishop, P. Campbell, A. J. Clarke, E. R. Clarke, M. J. Crowe.
