HEARING FIXED
Application For Wages Order (P.A.) DUNEDIN. Feb. 19. The Court of Arbitration has fixed March 3, at Wellington, as the date ":r the hearing of the application by the Engine Drivers, Firemen and Cleaners' Union for a general order increasing the rates of remuneration. Under the Rates of Wages Emergency Regulations, 1940, the Arbitration Court, on application by any industrial union or association of employers or workers, was given the power to amend oy general order the rates provided for in all awards and industrial agreements. An amendment issued last night gives the Court authority to exclude a portion, the effect being to empower . Court, if it thinks fit, to grant an increase or decrease on part only of a worker’s remuneration. For example, in the case of a man receiving, say, £6 a week, it may order an increase or decrease in respect to part of that sum, notwithstanding that th: worker may be receiving wages in excess of the minimum award rate. The amendment also gives the Court authority to vary the amount so excluded in the case of female workers, junior workers and apprentices. Remuneration is defined as actual earnings, Including time and piece wages, overtime and any other special payments.
