RATE PAYMENTS

Percentages Fairly High Borough And Levels County Monday was the final day tor the payment of Timaru Borough rates before the imposition of the 10 per cent penalty, and on that day the borough staff experienced an exceptionally busy time. The total rate struck for the year 1941-42 amounted to £70,794, and of this sum £67,777 was received by Monday night, leaving £3017 outstanding. The percentage collected worked ■ out at 95.7. Foi’ the year 1940-41 the rate struck was £69,300, and the amount collected before the imposition of the penalty was £66,470, or 95.9 per cent. The amount struck this year was slightly higher than that of the previous year, and the percentage collected r. fraction less, but the position can be regarded as satisfactory. LEVELS COUNTY The Levels County rates fell due on the same day as those in the borough. The general rate struck totalled £15,048 and the amount collected was £14,500, or 96.4 per cent. In the previous year the total rate was £13,595 and the amount collected £13,042 or 96 per cent. The collection of the Seadown water rate showed a slight drop in comparison with the previous year. The amount struck this year was £393, and the sum collected £343 or 87.3 per cent. The previous year 1 the figures were £420 and £385, or 91.7 per cent. The Fairview ratepayers met their commitment in full, namley £l3l. Last year all but £2 was collected before the penalty date. This is the first year in which the Downlands water rate has been collected. The total due is £6290, and up to the present £4580 has been received, representing 72.9 per cent. As those benefiting by the scheme still have six weeks in which to pay, a fair sum will probably yet be paid in. •
