TEMUKA LIVE HEDGES

An Evergreen Topic Common Sense Should Be Used The encroachment of hedges is an evergreen topic in Temuka and it cropped up again at the meeting of the Temuka Borough Council on Wednesday at which the Mayor (Mr W. H. McMillan) presided. Acting under instructions received from a previous meeting of the Council, the foreman (Mr T. Devine) renorted that he had prepared a list of 77 sections, the hedges on which were not in conformity with the regulations. The report stated that the matter had been under consideration for some time and the foreman would prefer an inspection to be made by a committee appointed by the council. The Mayor: There is already a committee for that purpose in existence, comprising Messrs Ritchie, Burns and Harrison. Cr. Ritchie: !• am against it. It means placing too much responsibility on the shoulders of the committee. If we had to tell his Worship the Mayor to cut his hedge back. . . . The Mayor: I have no hedge! Cr. Gourley: Only fences that are overhanging badly should be classed as offending. There are not more than half a dozen hedges in the borough really bad. Cr. Burns: If the job is to be done, it should be done reasonably. The hedges on the main road are an asset to Temuka. The Mayor: Common sense has to be used. The matter was referred to the committee to deal with. Cr. Chapman reported that there had been a complaint by the fire inspector about the sections at the back of the Crown Hotel sample-rooms. In their present state they constituted a definite fire hazard. It was agreed that the owner of the property be written to pointing out the fire menace that existed. It was decided that the 10 per cent penalty be added to all rates unpaid by Monday, March 16. AMATEUR ATHLETICS At the Temuka Amateur Athletic Club’s meeting held in the Temuka Domain the results were as follows: 100 Yards—G. Moore 1, S. J. Morrow 2, E. Archibald 3. 880 Yards—W. Dippie 1, J.
