POLICE STATION

Minister Explains Delay In Building New Rail Service Difficulty in securing material has delayed a start on the building of the new Timaru Police Station, but building will start as soon as materials come to hand. This assurance was contained in a letter from the Minister in Charge of the Police Department (Hon. D. Wilson, M.L.C.) read at a meeting cf the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last night. The Minister was replying to a letter from the Chamber reminding him of his statement that the work, was to be put in hand before the close of 1941. Rai! Services The Progress Committee reported that after the refusal of the Minister (the Hon. R. Semple) to approve the inauguration of an additional rail service between Dunedin and Christchurch by rail car, the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce had asked the District Traffic Manager at Dunedin, as a convenience to businessmen, to put passenger carriages on to the new express goods service between Dunedin and Christchurch. The traffic manager stated that the proposal could not be approved, as it would mean that less goods tonnage could be transported. The Dunedin Chamber now asked the support of the South Canterbury Chamber in placing the proposal before the Minister. The report was referred to the Transport Committee with power to act. Distorted Rumours “I think it is only fitting that this Chamber of Commerce should express its protest against the distorted and unpatriotic rumours that are broadcast throughout the Dominion by some listeners in,” declared Mr A. E. S. Hanan. “It is to be deplored that anyone calling himself a Briton should be so eager to repeat Axis propaganda. By doing so they are not helping our Armed Forces, who are risking their lives for us. We are aware that mistakes have been made, but this is not the time for post-mortems and outbursts. This is the time to show determination and grit and work- in order that these reverses will not occur again.” The Chamber endorsed the protest.
