HEALTH CAMP

Work Of Committee Appreciated Generous Public Support At a meeting of the South Canterbury Health Camp Committee special reference was made to the organising work performed in connection with the Geraldine camp by Messrs R. J. Runciman and C. G. Baker. “The success of the organisation of these two enthusiasts contributed to the success of the camp,” said Mr C. W. Browne, in moving a vote of thanks on behalf of the parents of the children and the residents of South Canterbury, who fully appreciated the work of these two men. Mr D. Murchison, In seconding the motion, said that without the enthusiasm and hard work of Mi’ Runciman. as president, and Mr Baker, as secretary, the camp would not have proved the success it was. Complimentary reference was also made to the work of Nurses Garland and McGuire, on whose shoulders fell the responsibility for the care and welfare of the children. Nurse’s Report The report on the camp by the nurse stated the health of the children was good. There were minor ailments, coughs, sore throats, scratches and some over-eating, but nothing to worry about. The nurse considered that owing to adequate staff (provided by the Health Camp Committee) they were able to have constant supervision of all children, which was very important, especially with the boys in the majority. There were no accidents, and as far as she knew no destruction to the school property. The children seemed very happy. They had plenty of space for games and fun, and no work to do. They organised their own concerts which they loved doing. Plenty of swimming and walks, and pictures every Wednesday afternoon were also thoroughly enjoyed. After referring to the generous assistance of the public in donating food, the nurse mentioned that the only thing which worried her was the precautions against fire, which were Inadequate. The Health Camp Committee was to be congratulated on the way they arranged everything for the children’s comfort, and also that of the staff. She received great help and support from Miss McGuire and the staff, and she thanked all members of the South Canterbury Health Camp Committee, and the Geraldine Health Camp Committee for their help, also Red Cross nurses, and the clergy who took the services on Sundays.
