SCOUT WEEK
INAUGURATION TO-DAY Final arrangements for Scout Week, which will be inaugurated by the Governor-General in a broadcast this evening, were made at a meeting of Scouters and, in view of the curtailed programme, the Commissioner agreed to cancel all functions on Saturday with the exception of the Rally in the afternoon and the combined Scout and Guide Memorial Service on Sunday. The function to be held on Caroline Bay on Saturday afternoon will be opened by the Acting-Mayor, Mr P. B. Foote, and although working under difficulties, Mr Osborne intimated that the bandsmen would be able to assist. The demonstrations will be mostly of a pioneering nature, consisting of bridge and tower building, with the breechesbuoy in operation by the Sea Scouts. A camp will be erected on the ground with all the necessary gadgets that would be seen at a Scout camp. Signalling and ambulance stations, together with cooking tests, have been arranged. The making of rope and the Scout work on camouflage nets for defence purposes will keep all Scouts busy. Wide games for clubs will be under the control of the Cubmasters who have arranged a good programme. Miss Young reported that the Guides would be able to take part in the rally, and demonstrations in signalling, ambulance, wide games and other activities in Guiding would form part of their programme. The Commissioner stated that Captain Simpson, of the Salvation Army, had agreed to conduct the Scout and Guide Memorial Service on Sunday afternoon.
