RICCARTON NOTES
(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 18. F. D. Jones has Erambie and Scottish Dale sprinting in fine style and they will start racing again at Motukarara next month. Erambie showed excellent promise last season, but one of her legs gave trouble and she had to be spelled after winning the Trial Stakes at the summer meeting at Riccarton. So far Erambie has shown no signs of her trouble recurring and this smart Iliad marc should soon be led in a winner. Scottish Dale also did well during her short spell and an early return to form can be expected in her case. Spartan is unlikely to accompany Palfrey and Doria to Wingatul, as though he is progressing favourably, he is not yet forward enough for a stiff race over a mile. P. McGrath has dropped the idea of racing Full Pitch on the West Coast owing to difficulty in securing a suitable rider, a weakness that is likely to affect the programmes of other horses from now on. Full Pitch will be tried again at Motukarara next month. All the Rlccarton Dunedin Cup candidates—Gladynev, Wild Talk, Palfrey, Wild Fox and Arctic Dawn—are training on satisfactorily, but it is generally recognised that they will have the hardest part to do to beat Hearth. F. Roberts has Winning Rose, a two-year-old chestnut filly by Winning Hit from Rose of Tralee, a useful race mars in her day. shaping nn nicelv and she
may be more than useful. Winning Rose should come early. F. Christmas is undecided regarding the team he will take to Hokitika. Good Scout would need to improve on recent race and track form to have a chance, but in Mark Out and Gay Thread he has a pair which should not be long before being seen in a winning light. Not Out and Salutation were physicked and given an easy time after Motukarara and they look all the better for it. Both will be at Motukarara again next month. Alert, an unlucky Lord Warden filly, has been returned to her owner, Mr A. S. Elworthy, by G. Ridgway. In eight starts this season Alert has a record of two seconds, two thirds and three fourths without getting a winning turn. Locrian, a recent addition to M. B. Edwards’s team, with Imperium, is to be tried oht on the West Coast, but on his form in the North Island lie is not of much account.
