NATIONAL SAVINGS Mr G. Berney, chairman of the National Savings Committee, announced on Monday morning that the district quota for the week ending February 21 was filled. The flag which had been flying over the week-end will be left in the same position throughout the week. HOME GUARD The latest routine order announces the tollowing postings: To Intelligence section, Coi-porals E. Breach, E. Gallen and V. LeCren. To A company, No. 2 Platoon, R. J. A. Wilson. B Company, No. 4 Platoon, W. S. Wreford. D Company, No. 1 Platoon, M. J. Naughton, J. Rodgers. T. R. Nee. Guards Vital Points, C. E. Davis, E. J. Gallen. Guardsmen who have rifles and who leave their locality for 12 hours are asked to hand in rifles to section commanders. A warning is issued to Guardsmen not to listen to rumours. Acknowledgment is made of the assistance rendered by the Mt. Nessing and Albury sub-branches of the Red Cross Society, in providing first aid outfits for the Home Guard in those areas. Also of the valuable assistance to first aid training given by the V.A.D.’s of the districts. The following guardsmen are listed as dispatch riders with motor cycles: Mt. Nessing, J. Askin, B. Kidd. Sherwood Downs, R. D. Ewart. Albury. A. B. Smith, H. G. Calder, R. L. Pearce. Regarding compulsory registration in the E.P.S. For the purpose of the regulation, an active Guardsman is one who attends all parades unless given leave of absence by his commander. Unless a Guardsman fulfils this obligation he must enrol. It is emphasised that every endeavour should be made to persuade active men now enrolling in thae county to join the Home Guard instead of the E.P.S. On Saturday afternoon the local company paraded and marched to the range on Mr P. Quill's property, where shooting practice was carried out, each guardsman firing the prescribed number of rounds. The shooting showed an improvement on the last practice. On March 7 the Fairlie Company will go into camp on the show grounds for the week end. It is hoped to have a good muster. POST OFFICE HOURS The Fairlie Post Office is closed from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. each day. Hours for the telephone exchange have not been altered. SCHOOL EXCURSION The school excursion was held on Saturday, when 308 adults and children travelled by the special train to Timaru, where the day was spent on Caroline Bay in ideal weather conditions.
