INVASION POSSIBLE
Australian Opinion MELBOURNE, Jan. 29. “The Government regards an attempt at the invasion of Australia as a logical possibility,” said the Deputy-Prime Minister and Minister of the Army (Mr F. M. Forde) last night. “It is not the only possibility, but one of them. It would indeed be a hazardous and desperate adventure for Japan to attempt a full-scale invasion, but perhaps somewhat less so than for Germany to attempt to invade Britain in force. It would be proportionately less hazardous, though still most risky, for Japan to attempt a limited occupation of the Australian coastline. It is clear that a nation so realistic as Japan will weigh carefully the strategic value of such moves. “The advantage to Japan of a successful invasion is so obvious that we must gravely assume that the attempt may be made. The war has taught us bitter lessons, and one is that we must not underestimate what the enemy may attempt. Nothing will dissuade us from making it very certain that the Commonwealth stays a free nation.”
