BOMBER CRASHES

Crew Have Miraculous Escape TIMARU PILOT’S STORY Writing to his parents from a hospital in Germany, Sergeant Pilot W Hayman, of Selwyn Street. Timaru, tells of the miraculous escape of the crew of a Wellington bomber, of which he was second pilot, when on a night raid over Germany on September 30. The bomber was damaged by antiaircraft fire and the wireless operator wounded when the Wellington crashed and caught fire. The two New Zealand airmen suffered broken legs, but the other three members of the crew were unhurt and dragged their three injured companions into a nearby ditch, where all six sat and watched their aircraft bum. As the night was foggy they were not located for several hours, but were later found and taken to a hospital where, at the time of uniting, all the members were recovering from their injuries.
