LITERARY AND DRAMA SOCIETY Mrs J. Crichton presided at a meeting of the Library and Drama Society. Mr J. E. Shears, who has for some years been president of the Society, tendered his resignation as he was leaving Fairlie to reside at Washdyke. The resignation was accepted with regret. Mrs Crichton paid a warm tribute to the work Mr Shears had done for the society. The success of its activities was mainly due to his energy and organising ability. Other members endorsed the remarks of Mrs Crichton, and extended best wishes to Mr and Mrs Shears and family for their future. In reply Mr Shears thanked all for their kind remarks, and for the assistance always readily given. HOME GUARD The following members of the Mackenzie Battalion are at present in camp or due to go at an early date. SecondLieutenant C. V. Kirke, and Corporal H. A. Aymes, B Company, Lieutenant E. B. Taylor. Battalion Headquarters, Second-Lieutenants E. Ridley and H. A. Wall, and Corporal H. G. Shanks, O Company. Major J. F. D. Jeune, M.M., Battalion Commander, who was attached to Brigade Headquarters, Ashburton, has returned home after undergoing seven days’ training. RIFLES HANDED IN The army buyers were in attendance at the Courthouse, Fairlie, on Wednesday. when .22 rifles were received and valued. It is understood that a good number of rifles were handed 'in.
