Average Earnings
Figures showing the average weekly earnings of A class waterside workers employed by the Wellington Harbour Board In recent weeks and the comparative costs of handling cargo were tabled at a meeting of the board this week. The board resolved recently to have such figures presented at every meeting. The following figures are the average earnings of A class men in the week ended on the date mentioned in each case: December 2, £lO/2/5; December 9. £ll/12/4; December 18, £ll/2/3; December 23, £6/17/-; December 30, £7/3/4; January 6, £7/18/10. The combined average earnings of the A class men a week over the six weeks were £9/2/9, compared witn £lO/14/- for the previous three weeks, a decrease of £l/11/3 a man a week. The difference in the lengths of the periods reported on corresponds to the difference in time between board meetings. The labour cost of handling English and foreign cargo in October was 45.08 d a ton, compared with 42.38 d ih September. The labour cost of handling coastal and Australian cargo in October was 37.18 d a ton, compared with 39.67 d in September.
