CROCKS PARADED

Good Men Hidden Allegation By Security Department Indignation was expressed by members of the Temuka Borough Council at the meeting on Wednesday night of the reported statement by an officer of the Social Security Department that when arrangements were made for Mr E- H. V. Miller (manager of N.Z. Insulators Ltd.) to interview Scheme 13 workers with a view to their employment, the borough foreman <Mr T. Devine) had “hidden the good men and paraded the crocks." Mr Devine said that he had written to the Social Security Department about the matter, but had received no reply. Cr. Ritchie: It is very unfair to Mr Devine. The council has every confidence in him. The Mayor (Mr W. H. McMillan): Mr Devine has had years of experience with these men and should know exactly what each man can do. We know that he would do the best he could, but many of these men would be useless for sustained work. A statement like that can do a lot of harm. Cr. Burns: It is an insult to the foreman and to the council. The foreman is placed in an unfair position. We should demand a reply to the foreman’s letter. A motion by Cr. Burns and Cr. Chapman, that the matter be taken up with the Social Security Department, was carried.
