Worthy Bond, now' 25 years old, is still doing service at the stud. The loss on the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting was £340. The Oamaru Jockey Club is endeavouring to secure the use of its course for a meeting on March 21. The Gore Racing Club has been allotted March 28, in lieu of the day lost in February. The Woodville Jockey Club will hold its February meeting on the Ashhurst course, provided the necessary permission can be obtained. Judged on his performance in the Trial Plate, Autoscore should have prospects if produced for the Trial event at Ashhurst. Hearth’s half-sister True Mate, was expected to show up in her Wellington engagements, but while she showed early pace she did not run on. The feature of the yearling sales was the strong competition offered by Auckland buyers. They took all the high-priced lots bar two, and, in fact, can be said to have made the sale. After his antics at Trentham on Saturday, when, as favourite, he declined to line up and took no part in the Douro Handicap, Ever England is to be recommended for addition to the schooling list. As the Great Northern Trotting Stakes has been postponed until May, Free Again (sister to Pacing Power) las been eased in her work and her irst public appearance will probably ,e made in the Timaru Nursery Stakes. The Franklin Racing Club has been dvised by the Racing Conference pat its original dates, March 7 and fay 2, have been reallocated. The larch meeting will be held at Te Rapa ith stakes totalling £2250. The Phaleron Bay-Martial Lady filly urchased by J. H. Jefferd at 500gns., is a sister to Dominate, who, in spite of his Auckland failures, is one of the best colts of the season. Martial Lady is a half-sister to Beau Vite. With 600gns for Dominate and 500gns for this year’s filly, Martial Lady has had two successful seasons. At the 1939 sales her filly by Myosotis fetched Only 70gns.

The Dunedin Jockey Club has been granted permission to hold a one-day up meeting at Wingatul on Saturday, February 28. A division seems to be indicated for the Trial Plate at Wyndham. The entries total 29, ten over the safety number. The race is lor non-winners, but an unusually large percentage of tho§e nominated have been placed this season. C. S. Donald heads the trotting trainers’ list for the first half of the season with 13 wins. T. H. Gunning, M. Stewart and F. J. Smith are next with 9 points. M. Holmes and M. Stewart lead the reinsmen with 11 wins, O. E. Hooper being third with 10. At a matinee at Epsom, F. J. Smith produced the two first horses in an event for two-year-olds. Hilda Potts (Jack Potts-Lady Gertrude) just beat Karnak (yuite Sure-Bonnie Barbara). Both fillies are owned by Dr. Pezaro and Mr E. G. Bridgens. The big fields at the Wellington meeting contained a lot of moderate animals, in fact never before have so many started that had not the remotest chance of winning any money. In most instances, too, the public were fully aware of their lack of prospects and they were at very long prices. It should not take Arctic Dawn long to re-enter the winning list. The race he had on the first day at Trentham—his first since June—improved him and he finished very boldly for third place in the January Handicap. Arctic Dawn only needs to remain sound to win good races. For the first half of the trotting season (to the end of January), Dr. Pezaro and Mr E. G. Bridgens will head the list of winning owners with £2715. R. Townley £2130, B. Grice £2105, R. B. Berry £2028 are others above the £2OOO mark. Certissimus has earned £1405 for J. K. Teahen, who Is seventh on the list. • • * • The programme originally circulated for the Canterbury Park meeting included races over 13 furlongs. As a result of the transfer to New Brighton the distances have been shortened to a mile and a half. The Trotting Championship has been dropped, and is to be replaced by a two-mile handicap, a 4.41 race with a stake of £3OO. Though the Art Union colt, War Effort, has yet to win a race, he has been placed in six of his eight starts and has earned £145 in stake money. His efforts stamp him as a youngster of more than average ability, and the manner in which he finished in his two starts at Trentham suggests that he may develop into a useful three-year-old. One of the most improved horses to come through the maiden ranks this season is Patu-Po, a raking gelding by Nightly, who won a hlghweight double at Trentham. Each day he scored in easy style. He is a big and plain horse, but a sound stayer who looks capable of holding his own in better than high weight company. He is trained by W. Morrison at Otaki. Morrison saddled up another double winner at the Wellington meeting in Parlato. March Programme The programme for the Timaru Trotting Club’s autumn meeting (March 14) provides for a distribution of £2050 in stakes. Four events are to be run over a mile and five furlongs. The mile and a half equivalents in these are: Kingsdown 3.43, Fairlie 3.38, Temuka 3.35, Wai-itl 3.32. A synopsis is appended:— Kingsdown Handicap, £l5O, 13 furlongs, 4.2 (for trotters); Fairlie Handicap, £150,13 furlongs, 3.57; Timaru Trotting Cup, £4OO, 2 miles, 4.33; Seadown Handicap, £2OO, li miles, 2.52; Nursery Stakes, £5OO, 14 miles (for two-year-olds); Temuka Handicap, £2OO, 13 furlongs, 3.54 (for trotters) ; Washdyke Handicap, £275, 1.1 miles, 2.47; Wal-iti Handicap, £175, 13 furlongs, 3.51.
