MEN EXEMPTED FROM SERVICE

Must Enrol In Emergency Corps (PA.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 28. Compulsory enrolment in the Emergency Reserve Corps for men between the ages of 18 and 66 is required of men exempted from military service by virtue of successful appeals irrespective of the grounds on which they were made. The fact that an appeal on Jie grounds of conscientious objection to serving with the Armed Forces has been allowed does not excuse the individual concerned from liability to enrol. Those granted exemption from enrtlment include men actively attached to any of his Majesty’s Naval, Militarv or Air Forces. It was stated officially this evening that a man was not regarded as being actively attached to the Armed Forces unless he was actually serving in such forces or had been already posted to a unit in anticipation of going into camp in the near future. Conscientious objectors whose appeals had been granted were just as liable to enrol as any other person who had been exempted from military service because of an appeal. Liability to enrol was the same irrespective of whether the appeal had been made by the individual himself or on his behalf by his employers or some other party. The obligation to enrol also extends to men called up in the recent ballot, but those passed fit and mobilised will not be required for the Emergency Reserve Corps. An interesting feature of the Regulations is that Maoris have to apply for enrolment in the corps, though compulsory military service does not apply to members of the native race.
