BROKEN BLACKOUT

EXCITEMENT IN VILLAGE LONDON, November 17. Electrical experts visited the little village of Ugborough, near Plymouth, the other day, and tried to solve the mystery of the broken blackout. Ugborough was aroused in the small hours to find all the street lamps shining for the first time since the war. A woman gave the alarm. Villagers. rushed out in their nightclothes, climbed up the lamp-posts and smashed the bulbs. But not for two hours was the blackout restored. The lamps were operated by a timeswitch which was put out of action when war began. It was still not functioning when examined by the experts. So the mystery is still unsolved, but it is thought a short-circuit may be to blame. One woman, a London evacuee, was disappointed. When she was awakened by the shouting and saw all the lights on she thought the war was over.
