Mayoress Honoured By Councillors Presentation Made On Saturday evening the town clerk of Temuka (Mr A. G. Foreman), the borough foreman (Mr T. Devine), and a number of councillors waited upon the Mayoress (Mrs W. H. McMillan) at her home in Railway Terrace to make her a presentation in recognition of the interest taken by her in her work and also in providing supper for the councillors and staff at the monthly meetings of the Borough Council. The 'deputy-mayor (Mr J. M. A. Ritchie), said that they greatly appreciated the very keen interest displayed by Mrs McMillan in her many and varied duties, and for her hospitality at the meetings of the Council. Councillors P. H. Lynch, J. Gourley and W. L. Harrison, the Town Clerk (Mr A. G. Foreman) and Mr T. Devine also spoke in appreciation of Mrs McMillan’s services. The Mayoress, in reply, thanked those present for their kind remarks. It had been a pleasure to be associated with the type of men who were members of the council and the staff. INSTITUTE MEETING The president of the Arowhenua Maori Women’s Institute presided over a small attendance at the December meeting which was held in the Maori Hall. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr T. 13 Burnett was carried in silence. Business completed, the meeting took the form of a social afternoon, including games, the competitions and items by the senior girls of the Arowhenua Native School, under the supervision of Miss Lowhiri Wixon, being a feature. Thanks are due to the Miss Bremners, Miss Wixon and her pupils for their assistance in the afternoon’s entertainment. Prior to the social interval, Mrs Martin, delegate to the South Canterbury Federation spoke on the urgency for parcels and cakes for soldiers and solicited the help of -members. It was decided to hold the annual picnic on January 17 instead of January 18 as previously announced. Following are the competition results: Large blooms, Mesdames Palmer 1, Hearns 2, Barnes 3. Small blooms: Mesdames Boulton 1, Beeby 2, Clinch 3. Pikelets: Mesdames Clinch 1, Palmer 2, Beeby 3. Apron: Mrs Palmer 1. Afternoon tea dispensed by the members, brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close.
