FOUR MONTHS’ GAOL
THEFT OF DRUM OF PETROL (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 8. The theft of a drum containing 44 gallons of petrol, valued at £B/1/10. the property of William George Dean, was admitted by Henry Charles Martin, a fisherman, aged 27, in the Magistrate's Court this morning. Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., was on the Bench. Martin was sentenced to imprisonment for four months with hard labour. An order was made for the return of the stolen goods to their owner. Between midnight and 1 a.m. on December 7, the accused went for a drive in a car with a friend, said Detec-tive-Sergeant J. McClung, who prosecuted. The vacuum petrol tank of the car became empty, and Martin walked some distance to the Dean homestead. He stole a drum of petrol from the yard, and rolled it to the road. The drum was loaded on to the car and later planted behind a gorse bush near Martin’s home.
Martin admitted stealing the drum of petrol when questioned by Detective G. W. Alty, said Mr McClung. The petrol had now been recovered, and no restitution was required.
