A NEW PARTY

“Co-operative State”

In announcing the formation of a new political party, to be called the Uffited Liberal Co-operative Party, the Dominion organiser stated that immediate action was being taken to secure a full complement of candidates to go to the polls next year states the Wellington “Evening Post.” In view of the war situation, political campaigning would not commence until the usual time prior to an election. The basic principle beffind the party is to secure the establishment within New Zealand of social, industrial, economic, and political life on the basis of a co-operative State. The party is convinced that the old system of sec-tionally-controlled government makes for national inefficiency, social and poltical injustice, interference with' the fundamental liberties of the individual, and unequal distribution of labour, planning, administration, and reward. Believing that the old order throughout the world —capitalism, socialism, State capitalism, or any other “ism”—has failed, and that a new order must take its place if chaos is to be avoided, the United Liberals have a new plan for New Zealand. The plan includes the principle of co-operation in the post-war reconstruction, and provides fair and equitable treatment for all —men and women, soldiers and civilians—in the relations between employers and employees, between industry and credit control, and in all matters which will affect the common progress of all individuals. The establishment of a cooperative State, it is claimed, will mean the safeguarding and encouragement of private enterprise and a just standard of living, plus a share in the profits of production, for all State and private employees. Every man and woman will be a shareholder in the land he or she has worked and fought for. The United Liberals believe that, by the adoption of the new plan and the reorganisation of the Government on modem business lines, it will be possible to right all the present evils and injustices and remove all the present difficulties, which have been created by, and which cannot be overcome by,, the present system of sectional and class government. It is the intention of the new party to submit its proposals in full early in the coming year. The services of Mr A. E. Davy have been secured as Dominion organiser.
