NAVAL AWARDS
Men Of Ark Royal Included RUGBY. -er ’7. Officers and men of the lost aircraft carrier Ark Royal figure in a long list of naval awards announced in the London ■ Gazette. Lieutenant-Commander J. Sholto Douglas, Lieutenant E. D. G. Lewin, and Temporary Lieutenant R. C. Cockburn are awarded the D.S.O. for courage and resolution in operations in Mediterranean waters. For similar services the D.S.O. goes to Captain E. L. Berthon, of H.M.S. Cossack, Captain G. N. Oliver, of Hermoine, Commander A. R. Rosenthal, Royal Australian Navy, of H.M.A.S. Nestor, and Lieutenant J. B. E. Wainwright.
There are eleven D.S.C’s. awarded and 17 D.S.M’s., of which Ark Royal has a share. There are also many Mentions in Despatches. Stoker. First Class, Rene Sethren, of the South African ship Southern Isles, receives the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal for his steadfast bearing when his ship was attacked by an enemy aircraft which machine-gunned iU Though eleven times wounded, he stood to his gun and turned steady fire on the aircraft until it fell in flames into the sea.
